A hard day with two climbs, the Alto de la Cruz the steeper. Niévares has nothing; the first bar is at Peón, 9.4 miles in. From Deva, the Senda Verde de Peñafrancia is the nicer way into town. A 62-place municipal albergue at La Calzada is planned for Easter 2027. Gijón's beds go fast at weekends.

Other ways to go
Via Oviedo, the link to the Camino Primitivo
Leaves at Casquita, 2.3 miles past Villaviciosa, and rejoins at Avilés, or carries on to Santiago on the Primitivo
Villaviciosa to Pola de Siero 16.2 miles, Pola de Siero to Oviedo 10.7 miles, Oviedo to Avilés 18.0 miles: three days instead of two on the coast, 10.6 miles longer, and you skip Gijón. Pola de Siero has one place, its 18-bed municipal albergue (€10, no bookings); Vega de Sariego, 9.9 miles in, has a 16-bed one, and the Valdediós monastery albergue (May to October) takes bookings. Oviedo has 27 places, including the 51-bed El Salvador albergue (€7.50, no bookings). Most who come this way stay on the Primitivo: about 190 miles to Santiago in 13 or 14 days, joining the Camino Francés at Melide.
