A short morning: up Monte Avril on the old paved road, then down 213 steps into the Casco Viejo, with the afternoon for the Guggenheim, the Ribera market and pintxos. The cathedral and San Antón church stamp credentials. Next morning, Gronze warns of frequent thefts in the San Francisco district on the way out and suggests Calle Autonomía instead.

The new pilgrim albergue, seven hostels, eight pensiones and eleven hotels. The 60-bed Zabalbide albergue opened in June 2026 and runs June to September.
New in June 2026, in a converted water reservoir near the Begoña basilica, 220 yards off the route and 0.7 miles before the old town. 60 beds in two dorms of 30, donation, no meals. Owned by the city and run by Bizkaia's Camino association. Pilgrims only, 1 June to 30 September.
