Sleep here the night before you set off. The pilgrims' Mass and blessing is in the cathedral at 7:00 every morning from April to October, and at 7:30 on weekdays the rest of the year. Get your credential the day before at the cathedral sacristy, Espace Europa Compostela (23 rue des Tables) or Le Camino (2 rue de la Manécanterie).

Booking on the Chemin du Puy
There's no central booking system. Each gîte, chambre d'hôtes and hotel is booked directly. Phone works best; some take email, WhatsApp or Booking.com, and hosts will often ring the next gîte for you. Gronze lists contacts, prices and opening dates but doesn't take bookings.

In May, June and September, book Le Puy to Conques a week or more ahead; recent walkers found gîtes full weeks out. Elsewhere Gronze suggests 12 to 24 hours ahead, or two to three days for weekends and French holidays. Couples have a harder time than solo walkers, and the last week into Saint-Jean fills earlier.
Half board, with dinner at a shared table, is the norm. Many villages have no restaurant, so ask for dinner when you book.
Most gîtes open from about April to October, and many close for the winter. Check each place's dates on Gronze before you plan a spring or autumn walk.
Most gîtes expect a pilgrim credential and some take pilgrims only. Get one in Le Puy for about €5: at the cathedral, at Espace Europa Compostela (23 rue des Tables) or at Le Camino (2 rue de la Manécanterie).
Blankets are provided almost everywhere. Bring a sleeping-bag liner; a few places rent sheets for €4 to €5. Carry cash, since many rural gîtes don't take cards.
Sending your bag ahead
La Malle Postale carries bags from Le Puy to Aire-sur-l'Adour, including the Célé and Rocamadour variants, from about 1 April to late October. Its 2026 rate is listed at €9.80 a stage. It takes one soft bag up to 13 kg (29 lb), so a hard suitcase won't do. Book by the evening before on +33 4 71 04 21 79.
For the far end, Les Valises de Saint-Jacques covers Cahors to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in 2026, and forum reports mention Transports Claudine from Figeac. Switching company at Cahors covers the whole route.
Leave the bag in the gîte entrance by 8:00; it arrives before 18:00. Places with key-code entry may not accept deliveries.
Notes
For the whole trail
Stages, distances, climbing, places-to-stay counts, prices and opening dates come from Gronze's Le Puy route pages, read in October 2026 and linked from each stage page. Town coordinates come from Wikipedia and Gronze, checked against French commune boundaries.
Confirmed October 2026. Each place to stay shows when its own details were confirmed. Phone numbers, prices and opening seasons change from year to year, so confirm them before you rely on them.
