Camino Primitivo · Before you set off

Oviedo

Oviedo, capital of the medieval kingdom of Asturias, is where the Primitivo starts, at the door of the cathedral of San Salvador. Arrive the day before: the cathedral, its Cámara Santa relic chapel and the 9th-century churches on Monte Naranco fill an afternoon. Beds are plentiful, with 27 places on Gronze, but the 51-bed public albergue takes no bookings and opens only at 16:00 or 16:30.

Before you set off

Good to know

  • Get your pilgrim credential at the cathedral, the tourist office (which has a pilgrim help desk), the church of San Juan el Real or the El Salvador albergue, which sells it for €3 with a plastic sleeve (Gronze, October 2026).
  • The cathedral stamps credentials at its ticket desk during visiting hours; outside them, walkers have been told to ask a sacristan before or after Mass (forum report, 2022).
  • The cathedral visit covers the church, the Cámara Santa, the museum and the cloister for €8, or €4 for pilgrims with a credential; the guided tower climb (184 steps) is a separate €10 ticket, and tickets are sold online at catedraldeoviedo.sacatuentrada.es (cathedral website, October 2026).
  • Ticket sales run Monday to Saturday only: in October 10:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, and in July and August 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays without a break.
  • The waymarked route starts in the cathedral square: turn left along Calle Schultz (the Camino del Norte to Avilés leaves the other way) and follow the bronze scallop shells set in the pavement along Calle San Juan, Calle Covadonga and Calle Independencia, through the Argañosa district and over the railway to the Parque del Camino de Santiago in La Florida; if you lose the shells, ask for La Florida.
  • Renfe runs about six direct trains a day from Madrid, the fastest taking about 3 hours 11 minutes since the Pajares high-speed line opened in 2023; Oviedo station is about 0.6 miles from the cathedral, close to the route out of town.
  • ALSA coaches reach Oviedo from across Spain and stop at the bus station on Avenida de Santander.
  • From Asturias Airport, ALSA buses run to Oviedo bus station many times a day and take 40 minutes to an hour.
  • Correos Paq Mochila carries bags on the Primitivo from Oviedo from Holy Week to 31 October in 2026, up to 15 kg a bag; book online or by email by 20:00 the day before and give your next night's address.
  • Pilbeo also lists the Primitivo, from €6 a stage and up to 20 kg a bag, and walkers on the Gronze forum recommended Taxicamino in 2024, at €5 a bag per stage at the time.
  • El Salvador takes no reservations and opens at 16:00 from June to September and 16:30 the rest of the year, so book a private albergue or hotel if you arrive early or want a guaranteed bed.
  • The public albergues at Escamplero, Grado and Salas take no reservations either; the beds worth booking before you leave are the scarce ones later on, at Bodenaya, Borres, Berducedo and A Ponte Ferreira.

Booking on the Camino Primitivo

There's no central booking system. Private albergues, pensiones and hotels are booked directly, by phone, email or WhatsApp, or through Booking.com. Public albergues can't be booked: the municipal ones in Asturias and the Xunta de Galicia ones in Galicia give out beds first come, first served, to walkers with a pilgrim credential. Gronze lists contacts, prices and opening dates but doesn't take bookings.

  • From May to September, book the nights with few beds well ahead: Borres, Berducedo or La Mesa, and A Ponte Ferreira. A walker in September 2026 found no free beds between Pola de Allande and Grandas de Salime. Elsewhere, and in April and October, a day or two ahead is usually enough. Booking.com often shows albergues as full when they aren't, so message or phone them directly; most use WhatsApp.
  • 2027 is a Holy Year, because 25 July falls on a Sunday. The Holy Door opens on 31 December 2026, and record numbers are expected, above all in Holy Week, in July and from Melide on. If you're walking in 2027, book earlier than these notes suggest.
  • Public albergues open at about 13:00 (anywhere from 11:00 to 16:30 in Asturias), close for the night at about 22:00, and expect you out by 8:00. In Galicia you may stay one night only. Many have no blankets and kitchens without utensils, so carry a light sleeping bag, and pay in cash.
  • About half the albergues between Oviedo and A Ponte Ferreira are open all year, most of them public. Private albergues mostly open from March or Holy Week to October. From November to Easter, plan around the public ones and phone ahead.
  • Get a credential in Oviedo: El Salvador albergue sells it for €3, and the cathedral and the tourist office have them too. For the Compostela you must walk at least the last 100 km (62 miles), so starting at Lugo is enough, and from there you need two dated stamps a day.
  • Dinner is usually a pilgrim menu at a bar, and several albergues cook a communal dinner. Some days have long stretches without a bar, noted on each stage page, so carry food and water.

Sending your bag ahead

  • Correos's Paq Mochila covers the whole route from Oviedo, from mid-March or Holy Week to 31 October. It takes one bag up to 15 kg (33 lb). Book on elcaminoconcorreos.com by 20:00 the day before, leave the bag at reception before 8:00, and it arrives by 14:30. Correos doesn't publish a price per stage; its booking page quotes one, with a discount for five stages or more.
  • Pilbeo suggests €7 a stage, about €100 for the whole route, and takes bags up to 20 kg (44 lb). TaxiCamino, based in Salas, carries bags stage by stage on +34 619 156 730.
  • Bags travel by road, so you can walk the Hospitales route and still find yours in Berducedo. Some public albergues won't accept delivered bags, so send yours to a private albergue, pensión or hotel.

History and sights

Alfonso II and the first pilgrimage

Alfonso II, the Chaste, ruled Asturias from 791 to 842 and made Oviedo his capital. When a tomb said to be St James's was found in Galicia around 814, tradition holds that he travelled there from Oviedo, the first recorded pilgrim, and had the first church built over it. The Primitivo follows his route, which is why it is called the original way; Gronze notes that recent studies place the journey nearer 820 or 830. In 2015 UNESCO added the Primitivo to the World Heritage listing of the routes to Santiago.

The cathedral of San Salvador

Fruela I founded a church to the Holy Saviour here in 781, and his son Alfonso II enlarged it and made Oviedo a bishopric. The Gothic cathedral you see today was built from the late 13th century into the 16th, with a single tower about 260 ft high whose spire was rebuilt after lightning destroyed it in 1575. The bell called Wamba, cast in 1219, is still in use.

The Cámara Santa and its relics

The Cámara Santa, a 9th-century palace chapel usually credited to Alfonso II, holds the Holy Ark with the Sudarium, a cloth said to have covered Christ's face, and two jewelled crosses that became emblems of the city and the region: the Cross of the Angels and the Victory Cross. In the Middle Ages it drew more pilgrims than anywhere in Spain except Santiago. Revolutionaries blew it up in 1934; it was rebuilt with its original stones and reconsecrated in 1942. The jewels were stolen in 1977, recovered in 1981 and back in place by 1984.

The servant and the Lord

An old saying runs: 'Quien va a Santiago y no al Salvador, visita al criado y deja al Señor', whoever goes to Santiago without visiting the Saviour visits the servant and forgets the Lord. Many medieval pilgrims on the Camino Francés turned north at León to see Oviedo's relics, then carried on to Santiago by the Primitivo.

Worth seeing

  • Cathedral and Cámara Santa. Allow an hour or more for the church, the relic chapel, the museum and the Gothic cloister; the tower visit is guided and booked separately.
  • Churches on Monte Naranco. Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, built in the mid-9th century under Ramiro I, stand on the hill above the city; bus A2 goes up from Calle Uría, and Gronze calls the visit a must.
  • San Julián de los Prados. Also called Santullano, this pre-Romanesque church from the reign of Alfonso II is about a 10-minute walk from the centre.
  • La Foncalada and the pilgrims' monument. The pre-Romanesque covered fountain of La Foncalada is a World Heritage monument; since 2026 a monument to pilgrims, two bronze figures by Sara Iglesias, stands beside it.
  • Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias. Free to enter, next to the cathedral, with paintings from the 14th century to today, including El Greco, Goya, Picasso and Dalí.
  • Cider on Calle Gascona. The 'cider boulevard' is lined with sidrerías where waiters pour cider from above their heads into a culín, about two fingers' worth; Asturian cider culture was added to UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2024.
  • Carbayones at Camilo de Blas. The pastry shop at Calle Jovellanos 7, run by the same family since 1914, claims to have invented the carbayón, Oviedo's almond puff pastry.
  • La Regenta. A statue of Ana Ozores, heroine of Clarín's 1884 novel La Regenta, set in a thinly disguised Oviedo, has stood in front of the cathedral since 1997; Mafalda sits on a bench in the Campo de San Francisco park.

Sources and notes

For the whole trail

Stages, distances, climbing, places-to-stay counts, prices and opening dates come from Gronze's Camino Primitivo and Camino Francés pages, read in October 2026 and linked from each stage page. Gronze gives no climbing figure for Melide to Arzúa on its own. Village coordinates come from Gronze's maps and Senditur.

What couldn't be confirmed, and where sources disagree

Not confirmed: that El Salvador's building is a former seminary, which Gronze doesn't mention; the tourist office address; and the days the Sudarium is shown.

Gascona: Gronze gives its phone as +34 621 154 187. Its website address, alberguehostelgascona.com, redirects to alberguehostelgascona.es.

Cathedral: prices and hours are from its own website in October 2026. That website lists only ordinary Masses, so a pilgrims' Mass at Santa María la Real de la Corte couldn't be confirmed.

Bag transport: Correos Paq Mochila's price per stage couldn't be confirmed, as its page showed placeholder prices. Pilbeo's starting price of €6 a stage is the company's general figure, not one for the Primitivo. Taxicamino's €5 a bag comes from a 2024 forum post describing what was paid then.

Trains: about six direct trains and a fastest time of 3 hours 11 minutes are Trainline's figures. The 2023 opening of the Pajares line is confirmed only by news headlines.

Confirmed October 2026. Each place to stay shows when its own details were confirmed. Phone numbers, prices and opening seasons change from year to year, so confirm them before you rely on them.
